Kakamega Homeboyz ended their long wait for their first title on July 1, 2023, when they clinched the Mozzart Bet Cup at the Kasarani Stadium.

Homeboyz beat Tusker 1-0 in the high-stakes final courtesy of a second-half goal from experienced winger Kevin Amwayi.

Ordinarily, cup winners’ pocket Kshs. 2 million in prize money but Homeboyz banked an extra million given that the tournament and club are both bankrolled by gaming firm Mozzart Bet.

The firm has sponsored the cup in the last two seasons while their partnership with Homeboyz has been in existence since December 2020.

Interestingly, both Homeboyz and the cup organizers (Football Kenya Federation) receives Kshs. 20 million from the betting firm per season with the club set to pocket an extra five million should they win the league title.

Homeboyz failed to retain the title in the last season as they fell 1-0 to KCB in the quarterfinals played at the Dandora Stadium.

New Coach under Instructions to Reclaim Cup

Recently, Homeboyz made changes in their technical bench, bringing in coach Ken Kenyatta to fill in the gap left by Patrick Odhiambo, who who resigned and joined KCB.

Kenyatta joined Homeboyz on a year-long deal marking his return to the touchline after five months in the cold.

Odhiambo, left Homeboyz with his head high as he will be best remembered as the coach who brought the first title to the club and pushed open the door to continental football.

Club chairman Cleophas Shimanyula says Kenyatta has firm instructions to ensure that the club wins the tournament for the second time and secures a return ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup.

We agreed with him that he has to win titles particularly, the Mozzart Bet Cup. We have solved the problem that cost us last season and we are looking forward to working with him to deliver it.

While backing Kenyatta to reclaim the title that is currently in possession of Kenya Police, Shimanyula said he was confident of the club achieving more success on the pitch thanks to the continued patronage with the gaming firm.

For a long time, the outspoken club administrator has wished for Abana Abeingo to lay hands on the league title and break the dominance enjoyed by Gor Mahia and Tusker in the last decade.

Homeboyz came close in 2020, but their bid was punctured by the coronavirus pandemic while their excellent run in 2022 counted for nothing as the season was ultimately annulled.

Shimanyula believes that Kenyatta has what it takes to not only reclaim the Mozzart Bet Cup but also win the league title.

"The sponsorship we have been enjoying with Mozzart Bet has been playing a huge role in the improved performance we have had over the years. I believe we are able to win both titles this season," added Shimanyula.

Coach Kenyatta Determined to Leave Mark

The seasoned tactician is aware that his success at Homeboyz will be judged by the trophies he will win at the end of the season.

Kenyatta says the ‘game at a time’ is a tried and tested approach in Kenyan football that he will employ in the new campaign.

“Every coach wants to succeed at his workstation, and I am no exception to it. Homeboyz is a team that has won a title before, and I would wish to do it with them. It is a process that requires good planning and patience and in this case, taking a game at a time will be the right approach,” he concluded.
